We planted 232 vines of clone 332 Cabernet Franc around mom's house and planted 1,060 vines around my house. We planted several clones of Cabernet Sauvignon; 4, 191, 15, & 337. The entire vineyard is on 110R root stock.
The soil is Cortina gravelly loam. We planted 0.8 acre of vines around our homes. The vines are planted on 4' X 6' spacing and trained in the Double Guyot system.
The vineyard was planted and is maintained by Paul Garvey and his staff of Garvey Vineyard Management. They have been pruning each year with two canes with fourbuds each and two renewal spurs with one or two buds each. In order to reduce the possible bell peppery character common with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, my husband Bill Murphy and I remove the basal leaves between grape set and veraison each year. We also walk the vineyard at least weekly to observe the various stages of growth of the grapes and vines. It has come to be a labor of love!
Our wine business is supervised and cared for by 4 generations of Lawrence and Harrison women; my granddaughter Erika Lawrence (currently at U.C. Davis with a minor in Viticulture) my daughter Donna Lee Lawrence, my mom Lillian Harrison and I Carolyn Harrison Lawrence. We are a very dedicated, determined and visionary group of women with strong ties to our Italian ancestry and the wine industry.
